    Application Period for Non-Lawyers carrying on business as a Conveyancer
    1 July 2008 to 1 October 2008

    General information:
    The application forms will be available from 24 June 2008

    Providing you lodge your application during this time you can continue to carry on business as a conveyancer in Victoria without any disruptions to your day to day work until such time as the BLA makes its decision on your application.

    Professional Indemnity Insurance:
    Information concerning the insurance process including fees and premiums is currently being prepared. This information will be available from 24 June 2008.

    Lodging your application:
    During the application period, until such time as your application is granted, the conveyancing work you carry on will continue to be subject to the Legal Profession Act 2004. If you are granted a conveyancer's licence, you will then become subject to the rules and regulations of the Conveyancers Act 2006. Consumer Affairs Victoria have responsibility for monitoring compliance and enforcement activities under the Conveyancers Act 2006.

    If you do not lodge your application before 1 October 2008 you must cease conducting conveyancing work immediately although you may still make an application for a licence after this time.

    Company requirements:
    A company must have an individually licensed director to be eligible to be granted a licence, if you operate your business through a company, ensure to lodge both your individual AND the company licence applications at the same time. This will expedite the processing of both applications.

    Cost of a licence - no GST applicable
    You must pay the following initial fees to become a licensed Conveyancer in Victoria:
    Application fee: $385.90
    Licence fee: $930.70
    Combined Total amount: $1316.60 - for individual or company application
