Applying for a Motor Car Traders Licence

Unless exempt, if you trade in motor cars you need to be licensed by the BLA.

Before you apply for your licence, you should:

  • Find out whether you are exempt from the need to be licensed. A licence may not be needed if you are exempt under the Motor Car Traders Act 1986. For further information, refer to Exemptions.
  • Check whether you are disqualified. You need to apply for permission to hold a licence if:
    • you have been found guilty or convicted of a serious offence, or
    • if you have a claim on the Motor Car Traders Guarantee Fund admitted against you. For further information, refer to Disqualifications and Permission.
  • Seek independent legal advice if uncertain whether or not you need a motor car traders licence.

For comprehensive information explaining what you need to know about applying for a Motor Car Traders licence read the Motor Car Traders Guide. The Motor Car Traders Guide also explains what you need to know to apply for a Motor Car Traders licence.
