Cancellation of Licences

Ceasing to trade

If you/the partnership or the company cease carrying on business as a motor car trader you are required to notify the Business Licensing Authority (BLA) in writing that you wish to cancel your licence. You must also return the original licence certificate.

Automatic cancellation

A motor car trader's licence is automatically cancelled if the licensee:

  • Becomes a represented person under the Guardianship and Administration Act 1986
  • Becomes insolvent under administration
  • Becomes an externally administered corporation
  • Fails to comply with annual statement and licence fee requirements
  • Does not apply to the BLA for permission to continue to hold a licence within 30 days of being found guilty or convicted of a serious offence or the Motor Car Traders Claims Committee admitting a claim against them
  • In the case of Partnership and Company licences, if a partner or director is found guilty or convicted of a serious offence and does not apply to the BLA within 30 days for permission to continue to hold a licence
  • Has an unsuccessful permission application.

Permission

To prevent your licence being automatically cancelled you must apply for permission within 30 days from the finding of guilt or conviction, or the Fund admitting a claim against you. For information on how to apply for permission refer to the Disqualification and Permission page in the Applying for a Licence section.
